Ramadan Traditions & Significance
Ramadan is the month when Muslims worldwide observe month-long fasting and go without water or food during the day – from sunrise to sunset. Ramadan, however, is so much more than fasting– it is a time to look inwards, be with family, and connect with Allah. It is about reciting the Holy Quran, praying, doing charity, training oneself for piety, and much more.
When is Ramadan 2022?
Ramadan 2022 starts on 02-04-2022 in the USA. The auspicious Islamic month will end with the celebrations of Eid-al-Fitr on May 2nd, 2022. Ramadan is the 9th month of the Hijri calendar, a lunar calendar – often referred to as the Islamic/Muslim calendar.
Ramadan ends with a holy celebration, ‘Eid-ul-Fitr – a festival of breaking the fast but keeping the spirit of Ramadan in one’s self. Ramadan teaches compassion for the needy, promotes charity, and encourages adopting good deeds.
What are Eid-ul-Fitr Traditions?
Muslims perform a special prayer, in a congregation, preferably in an open field or the prayer hall of a Masjid. The prayer is performed in new garments, and after the prayer, Muslims visit loved ones, exchange gifts, and partake in festive feasts – Eid is a gift for the Muslims after the month-long fasting.
Ramadan 2022 Customs and Recommendations
The intent of Ramadan is to seek forgiveness and blessings from ALLAH. Therefore Muslims are advised to:
Fast from Sunrise to Sunset
“Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you may learn piety and righteousness.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 2:183)
All adult Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset – From Fajr prayer to Maghrib prayer – by following specified guidelines and rituals. However, ALLAH has exempted travelers and sick people from fasting during Ramadan.
Many scholars are of the opinion that children, the elderly, breastfeeding, menstruating, and pregnant women are also exempted from fasting during Ramadan.
Do’s and Don’ts of Ramadan
There are a few actions that could invalidate the fast; these are:
- Vomiting intentionally
- Taking medications
- Eating after the morning prayer, sunrise
- Eating before Iftar – the evening meal taken after the sun sets
- Sexual intercourse during fast
Performing Tarawih Prayers
Muslims perform extra prayers at night during the month of Ramadan in addition to routine 5 prayers daily. The recitation of the entire Holy Quran is completed before the last day of Ramadan, preferably on an odd-numbered night – as 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights of Ramadan are considered the holiest.
Itikaf is the practice of solitude and worship in a Masjid for the last 10 days of Ramadan. Muslims observing Itikaf do not indulge in worldly happenings and devote their time to prayers and worship.
The Itikaf starts on the 20th night of Ramadan and ends with the announcement of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Giving a portion out of your savings/wealth to the needy and doing charity is an important pillar of Islam. Muslims do charity by paying Zakat in multiple forms including, helping the needy, monetary donations, feeding the hungry, and more.
Ramadan teaches sacrifice devotion, and it is all the more special by observing it with your family and loved ones. Ramadan brings blessings and rewards and purifies the soul, mind, and heart.
